About glp-1 medications

before the introduction of these "wonder drugs,"...

most healthcare providers believed that weight loss and obesity were simply due to a lack of willpower or maybe issues with the modern diet. that understanding was flipped on its head when researchers realized that GLP-1 receptor agonists could help patients lose weight without strict diet and exercise regimens.

it is now well established that patients are not "the problem," rather, patients are living with a chronic illness that finally has a safe and effective treatment.

semaglutide*:  this medication mimics the hormone GLP-1, which is produced naturally by the body. semaglutide is the active ingredient used in ozempic©, wegovy©, and rybelsus©.  patients using semaglutide often experience weight-loss of 15% of their body weight or more. on top of the incredible weight loss, semaglutide has been associated with improvements in blood sugar, heart health, and even longer life.

tirzepatide*:  the newer cousin of semaglutide mimics two hormones, GLP-1 and GIP, which is thought to allow for greater weight loss and less side effects. tirzepatide is the active ingredient in mounjaro© and zepbound©. tirzepatide has been associated with weight loss of 25% or more of overall body weight. similar to semaglutide, tirzepatide has also been associated with many other improvements in overall health.

FAQs

what are GLP-1 medications, and how do they assist with weight loss?

GLP-1 medications, such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, mimic a natural hormone in your body that regulates appetite, blood sugar, and digestion. they help you feel fuller longer, reduce cravings, and support steady, sustainable weight loss.

how long does it take to see results?

many individuals notice a reduced appetite within the first few weeks. our goal is to promote healthy weight loss, approximately 1 to 2 lbs lost per week. significant weight loss typically occurs over several months, with optimal results around the 6-12 month mark when combined with healthy eating and regular physical activity. these results have been shown through extensive clinical testing of name brand medications Wegovy© and Zepbound©, and clinical experience suggests results are often similar using compounded medications.

what about compounded GLP-1 medications?

compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide may be an appropriate option for some patients. the FDA recently determined that compounded GLP-1 medications have a similar risk profile compared to name brand GLP-1 medications, but it is important that you receive them from a licensed pharmacy based on a physician's prescription. although compounded GLP-1 medications contain the same active ingredients as Mounjaro, Zepbound, Ozempic, or Wegovy, only a licensed prescriber can determine if a compounded medication may benefit you. you can read more about the FDA's determination regarding the safety of compounded GLP-1 medications here.

are there any side effects?

common side effects include mild nausea, bloating, or digestive changes, which often improve as your body adjusts. staying hydrated, eating smaller meals, increasing protein intake, and following your prescriber's clinical guidance can help minimize discomfort.

do I have to take this medication indefinitely?

not necessarily. GLP-1 medications are tools to support long-term weight management. some individuals continue using them, while others transition off with the help of lifestyle changes. we'll work with you to create a plan that aligns with your goals.

do you prescribe Retatrutide?

Retatrutide is a compound that is still undergoing research. although it (along with a number of other research peptides) has shown promising results in preliminary clinical testing, it has not been approved for use in any drug by the FDA. TOM Weight Loss does not currently prescribe Retatrutide, but we are closely watching its development.

what are the costs of these medications?

costs vary significantly depending on insurance coverage and medication prescribed. for instance, name brand Wegovy© or Ozempic© can cost over $1000 per month if prescribed through a traditional pharmacy. compare that to a personalized compounded semaglutide prescription that might only cost $99 per month. finally, a non-GLP-1 medication, such as a generic oral combination of naltrexone and bupropion, may cost only $20 per month at a traditional pharmacy--or less if covered by insurance. as always, it is important you discuss options with your prescriber.
